“…where Shattered Soul was exhilarating in its storyline, Lost Souls’ strength was in its gut-wrenching and heart piercing events. Ms. Devlin had me in tears, and my heart still aches remembering what had happened.  I have nothing but praises for this book, simply a job well done by Ms. Devlin.” ~Under the Covers

I have been waiting for this book since reading the first installment, Shattered Souls early this year. I rated that book 5/5 stars and added to UTC’s Top Pick list for 2013. Well, hells bells, the year is not over yet and Caitlyn O’Connell yet again made it to that list. Ms. Devlin really got this series pegged to be one of the best UF books around.

Cait, who is a recovering alcoholic, ex-cop, now private investigator with witchery and magic in her background is working on many things to improve her life.

~FIRST is her sobriety. She may not admit it yet, but she is a recovering alcoholic and working hard to keep it that way. Almost to that point anyway, but if she doesn’t realize it soon, it is only a matter of time before she falls off that wagon. I hope not though because I consider her strong in her own way , but with the stress that she goes through in each book…she teeters at the very edge of failure. I am rooting for her to keep it as is.

~SECOND is her relationship with her ex-husband, Sam. Trust has always been an issue with Sam and Cait. It’s what caused their divorce. The secrecy of Cait’s magical background which was the very reason that drove her to alcoholism really took a toll on their marriage. Knowing friends on both ends of the spectrum, I don’t blame Sam , and I understand where Cait is coming from. Trust is just hard to get back once it’s lost. It’s a destructive situation if the both parties are not willing to give a little. Fortunately, Sam and Cait will be in a predicament and will be given a real chance at their relationship. Sometimes, it really takes for someone to hit the very bottom of the barrel before realizing what needs to be done.

~LAST is embracing what she is. She is a witch and well connected in a magical world that she just cannot avoid. She is born of magic and has a sixth sense of seeing ghost, demons and other paranormals. Because of this connection, she will again, take on a job she enjoys , and this will give her the opportunity to get close to Sam. I thought with her embracing this part of her was a great idea and served the purpose of getting Sam’s respect and trust back. Now that he knows what she is, he can better understand her. And ultimately, this book is about their relationship. The case they are working on will give them the chance to get to know each other all over again. Not even Morin can get in the way. Morin, a sorcerer from Cait’s past had a big impact on her relationship with Sam and honestly, I didn’t expect it. I may have had my eyes on Morin, but after seeing Sam and Cait’s connection, my opinions of these men had a complete turn. I now have much respect for Morin and Sam has utterly captured my heart.

Ms. Devlin yet again, delivered a good balance of romance, nail-biting scenes and an exhilarating story line. But what had me captivated was the emotional aspects of this novel. Though the magic and witchery element can be debated as non-fiction, every emotional factor was every bit realistic. I had felt every pain and loss that the characters went through. I have to say, where Shattered Soul was exhilarating in its storyline, Lost Souls’ strength was in its gut-wrenching and heart piercing events. Ms. Devlin had me in tears, and my heart still aches remembering what had happened.  I have nothing but praises for this book, simply a job well done by Ms. Devlin.
