“So much of the focus is through Alexa’s eyes that we don’t really see how Caine is feeling and therefore, we lose the reasons for his actions.” ~ Under the Covers
In HERO, Samantha Young introduces a new contender that may or may not take the coveted spot as Young’s most hottest hero with Caine Carroway. With his stellar good looks and impressive resume, Caine has definitely got the rich man hotness down.
However, for me the problem lies in his attitude. I’m all up for hot rich guys with that sparkling confidence that gets him notice in the first place, but Caine came off as too strong in the beginning. The things he does and the things he says to Alexa make him a douche in my eyes and while I can totally understand the reasoning behind it, it doesn’t make it any easier to read.
The one thing I think the author forgot to do was give more insight into Caine’s character. So much of the focus is through Alexa’s eyes that we don’t really see how Caine is feeling and therefore, we lose the reasons for his actions. Yes, they are mentioned briefly at first and that’s what gets Alexa fired in the first place. However, every time Caine treats her badly, it grated on me and I couldn’t see past it.
I think my opinion would change entirely if we received more of Caine’s insight and his side of the struggle that’s between him, Alexa and their parents. Nevertheless, Samantha Young does infuse the book with a ton of fun, upbeat moments that bring these two enemies together in a believable romance.
