“I don’t know how Robb does it again and again but there’s no question that Eve Dallas rules mystery and crime. ” ~ Under the Covers
Sima is seeking revenge. Her boyfriend has dumped her even after she has paid rent and been nothing but good to him. With the help of her friend, Trina and a little alcohol in their systems, they break into his apartment to pull some pranks on him when they find Trey Ziegler dead, bashed over the head with one of his fitness trophies, propped up in bed with a knife through his chest and a holiday themed note that turns this book from cheery to gruesome fast.
J.D. Robb once again breathes life into my favorite characters, but this time, it’s a little more fun when the holidays are involved. If you know Eve, you already know her constant resistance to parties and getting dressed up. But when Summerset and Roarke through a massive Christmas party, readers wont be surprised to find a grumpy Eve in the corners. The best part though is when Eve goes Christmas shopping for all her friends. As much as she hates it, it shows just how far she has come in this series and how much she has changed and grown. It’s lovely to see Eve with her close family and friend, as much as she tries to deny that she likes it.
Meanwhile, Robb doesn’t mess around with the murder mystery. While she sets Trey up as the victim, as more of the story gets told, it becomes more and more complex and twisted. Trey is no longer a victim, but the predator, preying on women merely because he can. What I love about Robb’s writing is the intricacy in which each mystery unravels. When she first presents the case, it seems quite simple, but Eve unconvers more and more leads that change how you read mystery, which is why I think this series remains so fresh after so many books in the series.
Another thing I enjoy is the fact that Eve runs the details by Roarke. It does more than just keep Roarke involved; it’s also much more interesting to have her talking to her sexy husband rather than sorting through the evidence herself in her mind. In addition, Robb employs another trick. She has Eve dream encounters with the victims. In this case, it’s a nasty conversation that ends with her feeling disoriented when waking. But it nonetheless gets the details across, adding more drama to what can be an otherwise boring monologue.
I don’t know how Robb does it again and again but there’s no question that Eve Dallas rules mystery and crime.

This series scares me there are just so many books
I agree!!
Great review! I can’t believe she’s done so many of these. I’m still in the #20s I think but I’m so happy Eve and Roarke are still going strong! 🙂
I’m glad you review this series. I think it’s hard to review large, long series like this. But somehow she does it every time. I love her! Happy Reading
