ARC Review: After Hours by Cara McKenna

When I found out that Cara McKenna was releasing another book, I squealed with excitement! McKenna is one of those authors whose work I immediately buy without even reading the blurb. I adore her writing and she is one my short list of favorite erotic authors.

In AFTER HOURS, McKenna does what she does best, creating an unlikely couple in Erin Coffey and Kelly Robak. Erin is nurse who recently gets a new position at the Larkhaven Psychiatric Hospital. It’s a dangerous job and McKenna explores this as she gets into a lot of detail surrounding psychology and its patients. I could tell a lot of research went into this book and since Psychology is my field of study, it played right into my interests.

You wouldn’t think a psychiatric hospital would be an ideal place to meet the love of your life, but that is exactly where Erin meets Kelly, an experienced and confident co-worker. Their romance isn’t exactly the trail-blazing kind, yes it’s hot and passionate but McKenna approaches it with light feet. Problems, both the emotional and physical kind, act as a barrier between them and McKenna takes her time in building the romance from the ground up. I have to appreciate that kind of patience and tenacity from a very skilled writer.

Another thing McKenna is great at is her sex scenes. She adds a certain vulnerability to her scenes that make them more than just sheet scorchers. They mimic real life and aren’t always the ideal fantasy. She evokes emotion that paves the way to an amazing romance. I loved the power play between Kelly and Erin and the way Erin drew herself outside of her shell. It really was a romance that made their lives better.
