I have had a most definitely not common response to this series. I was not a fan of book 1 but then book 2, thank God I picked up, because it was adorably cute and I really liked it. So I went into this one with hopes of enjoying it just as much as SUSTAINED. But it wasn’t quite the case.
The biggest thing for me here was the characters. I love the style I’ve come to expect from Ms. Chase of having the hero be the narrator. It’s a fun aspect of this book because Brent is quite spoiled and he’s always gotten what he wants. I loved seeing him shaken up at times and enthralled at others. But I just didn’t care enough about him. He never made my heart skip a beat or want to swoon like I would want from a hero. He was just there and ok. Granted, he was funny and at times endearing.
Then we have the heroine. Kennedy was probably my biggest issue here because, although I love a feisty heroine, I found her bitchy. Too bitchy. Too much all the time. It felt like touching a prickly beast sometimes. And I get her backstory and why she is the way she is, but it sort of makes me think that what happened to her made her turn into a bully. And she spends a big portion of the book there. So I wasn’t her biggest fan.
The setup of this story though? I love. It’s a sweet second chance romance about childhood best friends! Kennedy and Brent used to be neighbors growing up. Both rich. Both spoiled. Both with family expectations of what their lives should be. At that time, that even included the two of them getting married when they grew up. She wasn’t a popular girl in school, but Brent was still attracted to her. Then things had a turn for the worst and Kennedy went away. It’s been all these years since the last time they saw each other. Now they’re both successful lawyers and they’re facing each other on a case.
While there are some good moments in this book, it was just ok for me. Entertaining for sure because the humor is there. And sexy a bit too. But I was expecting more.

That balance when it comes to a strong heroine and a queen b is tough. I can’t get into books when I get frustrated about that. But eventually I do want to get to this series.
Yeah, and I think it’s probably a mood thing on where that line is drawn. I may think one crossed it one day and had I read at different time I might’ve felt different. Specially with one that rides that line closely. 🙁
