ARC Review: About a Dog by Jenn McKinlay

ABOUT A DOG is the first book in the Bluff Point series by Jenn McKinlay. McKinlay has written many bestselling mysteries but this is her very first Romance book. I’m a big fan of all her Mystery series so when I heard that she would be writing Romance, I knew I had to try it.

First off, I will say that this book is very light-hearted. It’s a perfect summer read if you just want something that you can breeze through. There’s quite a lot of emphasis on friendship in this book and actually the first few chapters really focus on introducing the new cast of characters in a fun way. While I did enjoy the banter between them, I did think that the pacing lagged a little bit. I personally thought it took too long to introduce the hero because we were so focused on Mac and her friends. But, that being said, it means that readers can look forward to the next books in the series because they are already very familiar with the cast.

Like I mentioned earlier, there’s lots of good banter. This is one of the things that McKinlay is good at. The romance between Mac and Gavin is sweet. But the author does put a lot of emphasis on trying to be funny. Some jokes hit the jackpot while other scenes seem to come across as trying a little too hard. It might just be me, but I think you need to really be in a good mood to be 100% into this book. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to book two and more of McKinlay’s Romances!
