Review: A Slippery Slope by Tanya Gallagher

I couldn’t resist the appeal of this beautiful cover! I guess in retrospect I should’ve known better because new adult is generally not my jam, but this sounded like a fun book and I just had to give it a shot.

This is a hard book to review because it seems it is partly based on the author’s real life. Natalie’s is quickly crumbling around her. Her boyfriend cheats on her, she temporarily moves back to her hometown to live in her father’s guest house. She has to figure out how to get her life back on track and how to get out of their small town once again. She has the idea of starting a premium quality lube company and for that she ends up needing the help of her old best friend and crush, Jackson.

I did find this story to be unique but at the same time I thought the writing felt a bit forced and didn’t flowed smoothly. There may be some over the top humor, because I mean, you can’t not have some pretty damn hilarious moments when you’re trying to start a lube empire! But I also had some issues with it.

The things I didn’t necessarily love about this story are to be expected with the genre. There’s a level of immaturity in the way it’s written and the characters that is probably fitting for new adult, but doesn’t work for me. Instead of finding some things cute or adorable, I leaned more on finding them annoying and rolled my eyes. Especially when it came to the heroine.

The heroine is a bit crazy but driven to succeed no matter how far out there the idea is and what obstacles she finds along the way. And I have to give Jackson extra props for putting up with her through that journey.
