“It’s a solid paranormal romance read in a world with a lot of depth that I’m anxious to explore.” ~Under the Covers
Let me start by saying that I love the concept of this series! Although BOUND BY NIGHT suffers a bit from first book in a series syndrome (at least for me), I got all the information I need about how things work between the vampires and the different clans and how they relate or not relate with humans.
The set up is basically that humans know about vampires and keep them as slaves. Some vampires that we can call “wild” live in clans, following a very Native American vibe. But the humans aren’t necessarily the good guys here. Not only do they keep vampire slaves, but a small group of them actually wants to experiment on them.
Nicole, our heroine, has dedicated her life to find a cure for vampirism. This based on some tragic events when she was a child where she lost everyone she held dear. Well, everyone except her brother. Daughter of one of the most influential humans at the time, Nicole was seen as the enemy by clan vampires, including Riker.
Riker’s mate used to be Nicole’s caretaker and she was killed the same day that Nicole lost her family. Riker has never forgiven the humans for her death. But Nicole has never forgiven Riker for killing her.
Before you go thinking this might be a little weird about his dead mate having such a close relationship with the heroine, don’t. I thought it would be weird but as the events unfold and we find out the truth, you can’t help but feel a big injustice was done that has caused much pain in their lives. While Riker is an extremely sexy bad boy, he’s also a pillar in his clan and a man (vampire) full of heart.
BOUND BY NIGHT brings a completely new Larissa Ione than I’m used to reading. Her vampires come with a new set of rules, yes, but it’s also about the pace and style of the story. The writing is still just as awesome but where I’m always expecting fast paced, edgy, daring and sensual BOUND BY NIGHT takes it down just a notch. It’s a solid paranormal romance read in a world with a lot of depth that I’m anxious to explore.
